The resulting hardware/software powerhouse will allow cryptology professionals to build affordable PCs that will work like supercomputers when recovering lost passwords.

ElcomSoft, a leader in software cryptology and forensics, offers a wide range of password recovery solutions. Ltd. has released the Professional version 4.0 of Advanced EFS Data Recovery (AEFSDR Pro) for Windows, a powerful data recovery application that makes it easy to recover (decrypt) files encrypted on NTFS (EFS) partitions created in Windows 2003, XP, 2000, Vista, and 2008. In addition to all of the capabilities of the Standard version, AEFSDR Pro can perform low-level disk scanning at the sector level, enabling data recovery and forensics specialists to find encryption keys that have been deleted, even on drives that have been reformatted.

The Professional version of AEFSDR lets data experts recover files where users have set up multiple logical disks, for example when a 'C' Drive that contains Windows plus a 'D' Drive that holds data. When the system has serious problems, users will often reformat the 'C' Drive, and reinstall Windows, knowing that their data is safe on the 'D' partition. However, EFS encryption stores its encryption keys in certificates that are located on the system drive. After reinstalling Windows, encrypted data files on the 'D' Drive are no longer accessible.

AEFSDR Pro can search all of the sectors on the 'C' Drive, one-by-one, and find the deleted certificates, even if the drive has been reformatted.

Development History

Several unsuccessful attempts were made to design the ultimate password recovery tool. Using a crystal ball seemed like a great idea at first, but was quickly rejected. Rabbit’s foot seemed a better idea for some time, but subsequent tests demonstrated that the foot could only solve certain network problems with corporate LANs, and only when used by qualified system administrators. A voodoo doll was a total nightmare, doing anything but recovering passwords.

The first ray of hope shined after one of ElcomSoft’s employees was sent to Yakutia, a freezing province in Russia with real bears. He brought a shaman’s tambourine that was used regularly by the local tribe’s shaman to find missing things. ElcomSoft has conducted a full-scale scientific research of the new tool, spending endless hours chatting with Yakutia locals and shamans who use tambourines more often than we use our toothbrushes. Over than two hundred ritual dances have been performed, and today, ElcomSoft is proud to announce that the ultimate tool to recover lost passwords that cannot be recovered it in a traditional way has emerged.

Our visitors were rather surprised (well, of course we too) seeing our wall paper being torn off by organizers at our booth K35 when the exhibition opened. The answer is simple: PGP Corporation, which happened to be our neighbor at the event, was not quite happy. Not because of trademark issues or copyright violation, though.
