ElcomSoft's Windows Password Recovery and Auditing Software Now Supports Oracle and UNIX

One weak password on an Oracle or UNIX/Linux computer can compromise the entire network. The latest version of ElcomSoft's Windows password recovery application makes it easy for system administrators to regularly audit all of the passwords on the network, including Oracle and UNIX passwords, to ensure that they comply with corporate security policies. By loading widely-available Oracle and UNIX system hashes into the application, administrators can identify weak passwords, and make appropriate corrections.

The software also gives administrators a comprehensive solution for recovering passwords for files and systems when employees forget their Windows, Oracle, or UNIX passwords, or when they deliberately modify passwords in an effort to sabotage their companies.

For years, ElcomSoft's family of products has offered password recovery solutions for Microsoft products, including Office 97/2000/XP/2003/2007 documents, Adobe Acrobat PDF files, PKCS#12 certificates, LM/NTLM hashes used in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 logon passwords, PGP private keys, PGPDisk, PGP Whole Disk Encryption, Microsoft Money and OneNote, Intuit Quicken, Lotus Notes ID files, and MD5 hashes.

Distributed Password Recovery installs "Agents" onto as many computers on the network as the user desires. Each of these Agents uses brute force to try to recover the lost password. The program ensures that these Agents work together, and combine their computing power to find the lost password. The more computing power available, the faster the recovery speed.

Another module of the program, the Console, is designed to manage the Agents. This solution is best for big enterprises with thousands of clients, when employees leave without un-protecting their mission-critical documents.

Distributed Password Recovery can be easily installed in enterprise networks with thousands of computers, and generates little traffic. The Agents work in the background without interfering with other programs. That is, they use the CPU only when it is in its idle state. An administrator can get a report about the work that is done. ElcomSoft Co.Ltd. has released Advanced Office Password Breaker (AOPB) v. 2.0, an application that makes it easy to gain access to Microsoft Word password-protected documents that have been accidentally or purposefully password protected. The software is used by information technology support administrators, business managers, and law enforcement officials to protect their organizations from the perils of losing access to critical documents.

In addition to the brute-force, dictionary attack, and key recovery techniques used throughout ElcomSoft's password recovery applications, Advanced Office Password Breaker uses the company's "rainbow attack" subsystem. The enterprise version of AOPB is shipped with a DVD that contains special pre-computed hash tables that will allow you to decrypt an estimated 99.5 percent of Word documents in just minutes instead of days, even on slow computers. By pre-computing these hash tables, and providing them on a DVD or a 4-Gigabyte thumb drive, AOPB makes short work of password-protected Word documents that use 40-bit encryption.

The vast majority of Word documents can be opened in minutes, because most of them use 40-bit encryption. In Office 97 and Office 2000, 40-bit encryption was the strongest available. While Office XP and Office 2003 offer stronger encryption regimens, few people use them. By using the older 40-bit encryption, business people maintain compatibility across all versions of Word, as well as compatibility with many software products that import Word documents. The default setting in Office XP and 2003 is 40-bit encryption, and most people leave that setting intact.

Sector-level disk scanning decrypts files with deleted keys, even on reformatted drives

ElcomSoft Co. Ltd. has released the Professional version 4.0 of Advanced EFS Data Recovery (AEFSDR Pro) for Windows, a powerful data recovery application that makes it easy to recover (decrypt) files encrypted on NTFS (EFS) partitions created in Windows 2003, XP, 2000, Vista, and 2008. In addition to all of the capabilities of the Standard version, AEFSDR Pro can perform low-level disk scanning at the sector level, enabling data recovery and forensics specialists to find encryption keys that have been deleted, even on drives that have been reformatted.

The Professional version of AEFSDR lets data experts recover files where users have set up multiple logical disks, for example when a 'C' Drive that contains Windows plus a 'D' Drive that holds data. When the system has serious problems, users will often reformat the 'C' Drive, and reinstall Windows, knowing that their data is safe on the 'D' partition. However, EFS encryption stores its encryption keys in certificates that are located on the system drive. After reinstalling Windows, encrypted data files on the 'D' Drive are no longer accessible.

AEFSDR Pro can search all of the sectors on the 'C' Drive, one-by-one, and find the deleted certificates, even if the drive has been reformatted.

With both the Standard and Professional versions of AEFSDR, protected files can be decrypted, even when the system is not bootable so you cannot log on, or when some encryption keys (private or master) have been tampered with. In addition, decryption is possible even when Windows is protected using SYSKEY.
